imagesA Ranchito family has started the New Year with some terrible news after their loved one passed away in a road traffic accident on Monday evening just outside Xaibe Village.

47 year old Valdemar Cawich, better known to his friends as “Baby”, was driving his red motorcycle with Corozal license plate M-0515 from Patchakan Village to Xaibe Village around 5:30pm on Monday January 2nd when at this curve, he lost control of the cycle and was thrown off, landing face first onto the road side. Reports from authorities that the injuries to Cawich’s face were so severe that he died shortly after impact and could not be identified by his facial features. His identity was confirmed until they found an I.D. card on the body.

Cawich had reportedly been socialising and taking a few drinks with friends earlier in the day, which is suspected to have been one of the reasons he lost control of the cycle at the curve.

Cawich leaves behind six children.

The family also reported to us that on top of dealing with the death of their loved one, they are being frustrated by hospital authorities who are refusing to give them access to the body. According to the family, hospital officials have told them that they must wait until after a post mortem has been conducted on the body for it to be released to them. And because of the crime wave in various parts of the country, the family says they have to wait for the forensic pathologist to become available, which might not happen until the end of the week. The family says they are willing to pay for the body to be transferred to Belize City, where the pathologist is expected tomorrow, but even that is being refused.
