Armed robbers held up a Valencia bus driver and conductor in Corozal Town last night. The bus had arrived in Corozal Town on its regular schedule about 8:20pm and the bus driver 45 year old Carlos Canelo had parked the bus on 6th Street South, when out of the darkness out came two male persons, one who pointed what appeared to be a pistol at him and his co-worker Shamir Sanker. The armed male person demanded money and took a purse containing the day’s proceeds totalling about $860.
Reliable sources tell us that at that point, the bus owner was also in the area and he pulled out his licensed weapon and fired at the robbers before they escaped by running away.
The Police were called to scene to investigate, but neighbours who had learnt of the incident and were suspicious of some young men known to lurk in the neighbourhood, spotted one of them and carried out a citizen’s arrest and took the young man to the Police Station. We understand that the proactive residents found the empty purse on one of the young man’s pants pockets.
The Police have since detained another young man, and we understand that at least three more are being sought in relation to this incident. The money taken in the armed robbery has not been recovered.
