The Opposition People’s United Party has been adamant in condemning a proposal by the Elections and Boundaries Commission to postpone the timing of re-registration of voters after the 2018 municipal elections, but to conduct a re-districting exercise before then. Today during a press conference called by the PUP, Party Leader, John Briceño once again reiterated the party’s position on the re-registration and re-districting exercise highlighting that re-registration needs to take place now, following the revelation made by former Director of Immigration Ruth Meighan during her testimony at the Senate Select Committee where she essentially admitted to having facilitated election fraud for GOB by nationalizing countless persons without having met the proper requirements for becoming a Belizean National.

“It has come light, we have exposed it in the House and now we have the former Director of Immigration that has admitted that there could have been a voter’s fraud in 2012 elections, now we got a copy of the 2000 plus names and we did a quick analysis and that we have only managed to 1371names and there are two division that we want to bring to your attention; in Cayo North East we lost by 17 votes and with the 1371 votes these people that have been naturalized during this short period we have found out 71 names already that voted in that election in Cayo North East when we lost by 17 votes, when you look also at Cayo Central we lost that areas also by 44 votes, of the 1371 names that we’ve gone through so far we have found out that there are 66 of those questionable nationalities registered and voted in that election so if those 66 person would not had voted the PUP would have been in government right now, this is an illegitimate government and that is why we are saying along with the teacher’s Union that there must be reregistration before re-districting.”

In addition to a formal legal challenge, the P.U.P. plans to alert certain democratic institutions of the developing situation including the council of Churches, the Chamber of commerce, and the Belize Business Bureau among others.
