A group of UDP supporters, under the banner of an adhoc group called “Belizeans Against Lord Ashcroft and Courtenay” staged a picket outside the offices of PUP Senator and Attorney Eamon Courtenay this morning. The picket group held placards and protest signs and marched near Courtenay’s office for less than an hour. This is the UDP’s latest attempt to put political pressure on Courtenay, who is one of the attorneys in Belize who works for companies related to Lord Michael Ashcroft.

“But here is the man who was supposed to protect our assets and instead of protecting our assets he is there challenging the protection that has been given to our assets, man what kind of person that, what kind of vulture that, what kind of individual that?”

“So, one of their questions to the UDP has been how is it that the Prime Minister’s law firm is also on retainer representing Lord Ashcroft interest as well, what is the response to that?”

Alfonso Noble – UDP Activist

“I am not concern about what the Prime Minister did, had done or will do I am concern about what Courtney is doing now, today what he is doing in the Supreme Court. Are you aware of the gravity of this situation? That if this man is successful at the Supreme court level he will be able to unlock the security features that have been put on our reserves, he will be able to challenge our reserves, take hold of our reserves and then bread and butter is no longer you know. We won’t be able to import wheat, we won’t be able to import butter, is that something that we should be taking lightly, this is public enemy number one you know, if he is able to do something like this doesn’t that mean that he cares nothing about the safety and security of our country.”

“You think that by removing the Senator that will make a difference as it relates to Ashcroft?”

Alfonso Noble – UDP Activist

“Well I hope it does”

Courtenay was asked about the attack and he wasn’t surprised by it, in fact he stated everyone has a right to protest.

“I don’t know who the people are, we live in a democracy, they are entitled to demonstrate, express their free well and to show their disagreement with myself or anybody else in the country and I have no quarrel with them doing that, it does not seem to me to be a advisable course but that’s their right so I have no objections to that.”
