Escuela Secundaria Tecnica Mexico high school was in celebratory mood today as it rolled out the red carpet to welcome a major donation of brand new lab equipment handed over by the Social Investment Fund.

A brief ceremony held at the institution’s conference room this afternoon, opened with the school’s ESTM Ambassador’s band playing a lively rendition of the national anthem, followed by a welcome address from the school principal and then right into the formal handing over of the donation.

Presenting the items on behalf of SIF was their Technical Officer for the Northern Region, Freddi Cabb, who told us that the donation represents the first phase in a larger project funded with support from the Caribbean Development Bank.

“What we are donating for Escuela Secundaria Technica is under the basic need trust fund, the equipment encompass chemicals and equipment for the Science lab that will cater for the biology and the chemistry classes that are being presently being given in Escuela Secundaria. It is an investment of 1.2 million dollars under the BNTF round eight which is a grant being given by the Caribbean Development Bank; this has three components, one of the first components is the science equipment and chemicals and also the building of six classrooms state of the art with sanitation facilities for teachers and students and third component was also the agriculture sector we are going to invest in the area of irrigation and providing some need equipment for Escuela Secundaria. When we did the assessment we look at the development at Escuela Secundaria and one of the things that we liked about this institution it was that it was catering for rural villages especially for the young people that couldn’t access education in towns and cities so looking at this and knowing that it captures a bigger pool of young people that are or that have the interest on vocational and technical careers we decided that we wanted to continue investing to ensure that the growing population of students that want this particular courses would be met since for the past five years we understand the Escuela Secundaria has been growing at a approximately 10% each year.”

The items donated today are valued at about $40,000. The second phase of the project, which is the construction of the new classrooms will start in a few weeks and take 7-8 months to complete. The bid for that project was awarded to LV & Sons Construction Company, owned by Liborio Vega, who is the brother of Orange Walk North area representative Gaspar Vega.
