Three well-known Belizean bodybuilding athletes are preparing to represent Belize on the world-stage. The country’s buffest, five-time Mr. Belize bodybuilding champ Rigo Vellos, is leaving tomorrow to participate in the Arnold Sports Festival to be held in Columbus, Ohio. Two other athletes Oyinkro Akpobodor and Aurel Lewis will also compete.

The Festival features the very popular Arnold Classic competition which attracts athletes from all over the world. Vellos will be participating for the second time, since his first entry in 2014 in the Light Heavy-weight category in which he placed 9th. Today we met him at the Spartan Gym in Corozal Town and he told us why he believes he is better prepared this time around.

“The Arnold Classic competition is a very hard competition that is where you compete with the best of the best from around the world in the Amateur level and my expectations are to represent Belize very well, I had already competed out there in 2014 and I came in ninth and I am hoping this time it will be a better placement for me and Belize. I had to make sure that I grow meaning in am in weight, body size, muscle size, the last time I completed in the 90 kilos and this time I am going to compete in the 100 kilos I took trace break to make sure that I grow in the sport, learning tricks, get more experience at other places and grow basically mentally and physically. Having the experience then you now more or less what to expect out there, how to prepare, how you need to look, so the experience is really, really helping me this time and am making sure that I go up far better prepared than I went compared to when I went to 2014.”

The goal for Vellos and the other athletes is to be recognised and awarded a pro-card by the organising body, the International Federation of Body Building, IFBB. Vellos says all his years of hard-work and dedication are really focused on that single goal, and actually achieving it would a historic and major success for him and the country.

Rigo Vellos, 5x Mr. Belize

“The ultimate goal for a body builder is always to get his pro card and getting it simply means I would have to leave the amateur level behind including the Mr. Belize but again I started doing bodybuilding because of my dreams and not going towards getting my pro card would mean putting my dreams behind and am not planning to do that so I am going 100% towards my dream and if the opportunity comes for a pro card then I’ll surely take it. Like in everything nothing can be done on its own, I am not the five times Mr. Belize just because I woke up one morning, I had to have the support and the help from other people, from certain businesses so I would like to thank Smart for helping me out for the past couple years in my international competition and in the local competition, I would like to thank my family, the Spartan family and the whole of Corozal community and the whole country of Belize.”

While Vellos will be competing in the Heavyweight category, Oyinkro and Aurel will enter the Physique categories. The competition for the three athletes will be held on Friday evening and you can expect us to have the results for you.
