At a press conference held on Friday, Foreign Minister Wilfred Sedi Elrington commented on the Opposition’s participation in the bilateral discussions with Guatemala. According to Elrington, the Opposition has been invited to all events and encounters, and suggested that it is the PUP who has been absent from meetings. Today, PUP Leader responded, rejecting Elrington’s assertions and instead accusing the Government of not reaching out to them.
Honourable John Briceno - PUP Leader
“We haven’t gotten an invitation from the government for quite some time, we’ve have always said that we’ve prepared to work but at the same time; one, they have not invited us for some time for any meetings so I want to make that abundantly clear but secondly our point to the Prime Minister and to the Minister of foreign Affairs is that it is meaningless if you inviting us to meetings just to be an appendage just to say that ok the opposition is there we believe that the government at the end of the day will have its way but then they should give us an opportunity in advising them we have people that have more experience than many people in the government when it comes to dealing with Belize/Guatemala and they refuse to take out recommendation so it is an issue of frustration that they don’t want to listen, it is an issue of believing that the government was going in the wrong direction in dealing with this matter and thirdly we have not been getting invitations from the government.”
