The Senate Select Committee hearings which have been investigating serious allegations of wrong-doing and irregularities within the Immigration Department via its public hearings took a very strange and serious turn today when one of the individuals involved in one of the scandals, the much spoken about “Mr. Middleton”, testified before the Committee and claimed that he is fearful for his life; and therefore, would not be able to provide information.

The statement left the Committee and members of the media on the gallery shocked, to say the least, and also triggered an early end to what was one of the least productive hearings since the Committee commenced in November last year. We say least productive because “Mr. Middleton”, whose name is actually Barton Middleton, and who has been named in multiple hearings as the privately-hired Immigration agent who traded visas that were deemed stolen, was apparently determinedly non-cooperative with giving helpful answers, claiming the ever-popular line: “I do not recall”. We’ll have more on this, but first to his claims of fear. The matter arose after two hours of cross-examination, when Senator Lizarraga asked Middleton if his life was under any kind of threat. This is how that exchange went:

Senator Mark Lizarraga – Member Special Senate Select Committee

“I need to ask you this question and I need for you to think seriously about it before you answer it: have you been threatened Mr. Middleton by anybody?”

“No Sir”

Senator Mark Lizarraga – Member Special Senate Select Committee

“Nobody has threatened you in relation to your coming before this Committee and speaking before this Committee?”

Barton Middleton

“No Sir”

Senator Mark Lizarraga – Member Special Senate Select Committee

“Are you scared for your life Mr. Middleton?”

Barton Middleton

“Yes Sir”

Senator Mark Lizarraga – Member Special Senate Select Committee

“Is there something you would like to tell us?”

Barton Middleton

“No Sir”

Senator Mark Lizarraga – Member Special Senate Select Committee

“Is there something you would like to tell the Committee off record?”

Barton Middleton

“No Sir”

Senator Mark Lizarraga – Member Special Senate Select Committee

“But you are scared for your life?”

Barton Middleton

“Yes Sir”

Reverend Pastor Ashley Rocke – Senator Special Senate Select Committee

“Why would a simple inquiry like this to find out truth and allegation made about you make you scared for your life?”

Barton Middleton

“Nothing is simple as it is Sir.”

Reverend Pastor Ashley Rocke – Senator Special Senate Select Committee

“Ahu thank you.”

Chairman Aldo Salazar – Member Special Senate Select Committee

“Issue that causes you to be put in fear for your life had to do with your testimony before this committee or is it some other reason which is related to this committee hearing?”

Barton Middleton

“It’s related to the hearing.”

Chairman Aldo Salazar – Member Special Senate Select Committee

“So that you are put in fear not by any direct threat against you but your own conclusions about what may happen is that correct?”

Barton Middleton

“It’s difficult to explain I just have seen strange cars followed me before that I never seen since this situation with… just a sixth sense I supposed I…”

Chairman Aldo Salazar – Member Special Senate Select Committee

“Since, you learnt that your name was brought up in these proceedings you start to notice strange things, vehicles following you?”

Barton Middleton

“Yes Sir.”

Chairman Aldo Salazar – Member Special Senate Select Committee

“But what we are trying to ascertain that this is not as a result of a direct threat?”

Barton Middleton

“Well, am not at liberty to say at this point.”

Chairman Aldo Salazar – Member Special Senate Select Committee

“Ok”

Senator Lizarraga also asked Middleton why he had not taken his concerns to the Police Department. In response, Middleton said that he doesn’t believe the Police can adequately protect him.

Senator Mark Lizarraga – Member Special Senate Select Committee

“Mr. Middleton have you shared any of the concerns that you have for your life to the police or the authorities?”

Barton Middleton

“Well, not necessarily because I believe that I heard a statement that the police cannot protect you.”

Senator Mark Lizarraga – Member Special Senate Select Committee

“Where did you hear that statement?”

Barton Middleton

“I cannot recall.”

Senator Mark Lizarraga – Member Special Senate Select Committee

“So it is your opinion then that if you were to make a report you would not be able to receive the protection that you need?”

Barton Middleton

“Well, from previous incidents in Belize we have seen time and time again that witness in certain situations end up dying am pretty sure you are aware of this.”

Senator Mark Lizarraga – Member Special Senate Select Committee

“And that is your concern?”

Barton Middleton

“Yes Sir”

Senator Mark Lizarraga – Member Special Senate Select Committee

“Thank you for being honest.”

Reverend Pastor Ashley Rocke – Senator Special Senate Select Committee

“And is that the reason why every question we’ve asked you, you said no?”

Barton Middleton

“Sir, I am not at liberty to discuss that.”
