Screen_Shot_2017-04-04_at_7.58.59_PMThe fact that GOB wants to reward teachers who did not take part in the October 2016 and January 2017 strike has given much to talk about over social media. Given the crisis the economy is currently facing Belizeans are already chastising government for its move. And today the Opposition also weighed in on the issue sighting that the move made by Minister of Education Patrick Faber

Is the sign of quote “A stubborn, immature and downright dangerous man who refuses to accept that he went up against the teachers and lost.” End of quote.

By now every Belizean knows that the Dean Barrow Administration presented an austerity budget of over $80 million in new taxes and almost $60 million in spending cuts - including for the Police Department, the Fire Department and the Food Pantry Program. So for Government to announce that one million dollars will be used as compensation for teachers is indication that the country is witnessing its first supplementary allocation, says the PUP.

According to the party, Parliament never approved the $1 million for compensation and if it is not a supplementary allocation, then it’s revealing that this kind of fat exist in what was supposed to be a lean budget.

The PUP also agrees with the BTNU that Government is on the move of Union Busting. The party even went further to remind teachers that government did the same thing with cane farmers when they disintegrated the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association.

And at the end of the release the Opposition states that while they cannot force any teacher to take the principled position of rejecting the proposed honorarium, caution is sent out that what appears to be attractive now, may well turn out to be a ‘knife in a velvet glove later’.
