This has been a terribly bad publicity week for the Belize Police Department. One which started with videos posted on social media of two Police officers brutalizing a female in San Pedro and then firing their weapons wildly to keep at bay residents who tried to intervene and rescue the woman. Then there was the unpopular news that the Police will do an internal shuffle, and will be moving community cop Assistant Commissioner of Police Chester Williams from his post of Southside Commander to a desk job.

But now, things will get even worst for the Police Department with a new video leaked to us, showing that a Police patrol vehicle, assigned to the Orange Walk Police Department, was being used to load contraband goods from Botes community in Mexico into Santa Cruz village, which is a well-known contraband point in the Orange Walk District.

The use of the Police vehicle as a contraband caravan is undisputable, as shown by the video.

According to reliable information, the footage was turned in to the Police Department for investigation, and is now under review by the Professional Standards Branch. But the question is why no action has been taken against the officers who were on duty and responsible for the vehicle? Well, that’s just what the media asked the Commissioner of Police today, and it was clear the question was serious enough to cut the ComPol’s smiles short.

“Mr. COMPOL, are you aware of a protest situation where police officers were caught on cellphone camera smuggling stuff from Botes into Santa Cruz and they are seen in a police vehicle taking on contraband items into this police vehicle passing it to Orange Walk?”

Allen Whylie - Commissioner of Police

“I haven’t seen but you could share it with me if you want.”

“Are you aware that such a video exist?”

“I have heard but I haven’t seen it.”

“I know that it has been in the police department that the Professional Standards Branch has it, is it something that interest you that you would say my god like for example: I have a little mickey mouse organization but if I hear that one of my journalist is out there being a prostitute for example I know the details of the prostitution, my question is, is this something that interest you or concerns you that officers were caught on camera using the police vehicle for the smuggling of contraband?”

Allen Whylie - Commissioner of Police

“Definitely would be of concern to me because if it is wrong doing we will deal with those issues I mean they are well aware that they should not be utilizing the vehicle for those purposes and more so for contraband in anything it’s against the law.”

“Sir, this incident happened six weeks ago and no action has been taken against the officers involved?”

Allen Whylie - Commissioner of Police

“Well you are telling me now so am telling you share the video with me.”

“But you all have the video Mr. COMPOL.”

Allen Whylie - Commissioner of Police

“I don’t have it Sir.”

“It is in the police department.”

Allen Whylie - Commissioner of Police

“But, I don’t have it, but I’ll look into it thank you.”

We will continue to investigate and follow-up on this matter.
