Screen_Shot_2017-04-05_at_7.56.17_PMNearly 150 athletes representing eight high schools from the Corozal and Orange Walk Districts gathered at the Corozal Community College this morning for the 2017 Track and Field Regionals. The event is hosted by Escuela Secundaria Tecnica Mexico. We found out from ESTM’s officials how today’s competitions will culminate with the nationals.

Pedro Chan, ESTM

“The list of event that are happening are the 100m, 200m sprints, 400m, we had the 5k and 3k early in the morning, we also have high jump, long jump, triple jumps all these event will be happening one after the next during the day. After today’s competition we award them with the medals accordingly and the high school with the most wins they take the regional championship, they will represent the region; Orange Walk and Corozal, the northern region at Belize City central Nationals that is happening in a few weeks.  Every high school in the northern region has representation here and then the winners, the champions they will be the ones that will represent the northern region in Belize City and then we have the wines from the South, Central and so on competing at National level. Over the years the northern region has done very well at the national levels also we have San Pedro High School who this year won in all disciplines and at the national level so over the years we have been doing good as the northern region, we have good representation when they go to the Nationals and sometimes we get to win at the National level.”

To fuel the athletes’ energy and motivation, the organisers invited 5-time Mr. Belize Rigo Vellos to appear as the guest speaker. In offering words of support, Vellos told the athletes what has been the key to success for him.

Rigo Vellos - Mr. Belize

“You know what has been the secret to my success, the secret is simple, has always worked actually, don’t compete with anyone but yourself, just beat you very best, impossible is the state of mind, let us commit to continue to strive to be the best in sports, the best in life, you are a crucial part of what makes the north, what makes society, what makes the community strong for you add all your abilities, always remember to believe in yourself, believe in God and believe in your goals.”
