Screen_Shot_2017-04-19_at_7.22.58_AMSome weeks ago, a leaked Guatemalan progress report circulated through Belizean media which showed that a consultant in Guatemala was pushing the idea to officially include Belize as part of Guatemala in their map. According to that progress report, which was done by a consultant who was contracted to perform certain activities for one year, Guatemala has been contemplating oil exploration, and a poll on the topic had been carried out back in January. In the report the consultant also claimed that he had met with different agencies, including the Guatemalan Foreign Minister about that matter.

When the document came to light the Belize Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not seem too concerned about it, judging from a response given on the matter by Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington at the time. And while there was no official confirmation that the Guatemalan government had been encouraging the idea; it was taken to a vote.

A report published yesterday by the Guatemalan newspaper Prensa Libre indicates that the Guatemalan congress has rejected a proposed resolution to instruct governmental entities to place Belize as part of Guatemalan territory. Prensa Libre states that with eighty-four votes against, the proposal of Representative Luis Fernando Montenegro titled “de Encuentro por Guatemala”, was rejected by Parliament with only Twenty-six legislators voting in favor. According to the report, the proposal was voted down and demanded that all organizations and dependencies of the State of Guatemala QUOTE “Use and only authorize maps of Guatemala that include Belize with a dotted line and must include the description: Territorial Differendum, insular and maritime pending resolution and that the dotted line reads: Boundary not defined”.
