Yesterday we showed you our interview with well-known Corozal community activist and senior citizen Fred Orio who was the victim of a brazen assault and robbery. Orio explained that an individual entered his store located downtown Corozal and ambushed him, putting him in a neck choke which caused him to pass out. When he woke up he had a blood shot right eye and money was missing from his cash register. There was no sign of the robber, except for a baseball cap which had been left behind. Orio said he quickly recognised the cap since the Friday before, a man wearing the same cap visited his store offering to do volunteer cleaning. The only cleaning the individual did was of some money which Orio had in a drawer. Orio told us he reported the matter at the Corozal Police Station, which you would have expected would have led to greater Police surveillance in the busy business area. But that didn’t happen according to the senior citizen.

“After you have made that report did you see a difference in the security in the area from the police?”

“Actually, no you know, but a lot of times the police has a very important part to play and a lot of my friends complain that they don’t make reports because the police won’t do anything any way then the police on the other hands says nobody makes reports so we can’t act so it’s both of us have a commitment and an obligation for the security of ourselves but I must say there are good policemen, there are bad policemen but either we are the ones that should make that difference.”

The Corozal Police have been under heavy pressure from the community in relation to their investigation into various recent criminal activities. At a peace rally held by the Rotaract Club two weeks ago, the Town Mayor informed that the Town Council would ensure that any complaint against the police is dealt with properly. Yesterday new leaders took over the formations here in Orange Walk and Corozal and we hope to hear from them very soon what strategies will be implemented to curb the crime spate.
