carnivalThe September celebrations are still couple months away but the National Celebrations Commission already held its 2017 competition for the theme and this year’s winner is “Belize, confronting Challenges! Celebrating Triumphs! Renewing our Resolve!” This theme will now anchor the celebrations for the two hundred and nineteenth anniversary of the Battle of Saint George’s Caye and the thirty-sixth anniversary of Belize’s Independence. The theme was submitted by Janine Sosa. Sosa won over the other two hundred and fifty-four submissions that were sent from across the country. Sosa’s theme was selected among the other submissions since the commission believes that her words focus on our unified Belizean people, cultures, and country and calls on us to recognize the often difficult decisions that must be made to ensure our nation’s progress. The theme also acknowledges the moment in which we take pleasure in the victories of our past and present, and uses these accomplishments to strengthen our advancement into the future, according to the commission. The commission encourages and invites all Belizeans – citizens, organizations, schools and businesses –to incorporate the theme and its significance into their preparations and celebrations for the National Celebrations this year.
