Screen_Shot_2017-07-27_at_7.57.11_PMA week ago we reported on the race war on the Phillip Goldson highway between buses belonging to Valencia and Morales bus companies. Commuters travelling on the Valencia bus that left Corozal Town at 2:45am reported that a Morales bus attempted to run them off the road. Well, it seems the bus wars have spread to the George Price highway as a commuter on the Western Road has posted recently taken video on social media with evidence of a dangerous attempt by a bus to block another bus from overtaking.

The video shows a J&J Bus line bus moving to the center of the road and applying the brakes every time a bus traveling behind attempts to overtake. To make matters worse, the video shows that the road is wet from rain which is a recipe for tragedy and disaster on the road.

A short while after the J&J bus stops to pick up passengers on the side of the road, but it also blocks the entire highway so the bus behind doesn’t pass it.

The commuter in her post explains that the clashes on the road occur daily but because of a lack of regulation on the highway from Transport officials, there is no one to stop it.

With the video going viral, transport officials took action. The Transport Board held an impromptu meeting to look over the situation and according to Chief Transport Officer, Tirso Galvez, they are prepared to take action

Tirso Galvez, Chief Transport Officer

“The Board has decided that the suspension will be for a month and that the suspension for that company; are wo runs that that company has and the Board will be providing, other bus service to provide that service that that particular bus line was doing so the commuters will be assured that buses will be available to provide that service for them, as far as the driver is concerned  the Department is looking at possible charges to be levied against this driver and one of the main charges we are looking at is wreck less driving which carries a serious penalty under the motor vehicle and road traffic act, other offences we are looking at is driving in contravention of the rules service permits also in respect to timing and so forth.”

Galvez also indicated that when buses behave reckless on the road, they endanger the lives of commuters and that is unacceptable

Screen_Shot_2017-07-27_at_7.57.25_PMTirso Galvez, Chief Transport Officer

“It is plain to see from the video that the driver of that particular J&J Bus was consistently impeding the other bus which the video was taken from by somebody in the other bus and showing that the driver for that J&J bus was obviously preventing that bus from overtaking , we also saw on that video where there is was a Coca Cola truck which had passed the J&J bus, that truck was allowed to pass but whenever the other bus intended to stay behind the truck so that they could have passed the J&J bus the J&J bus again blocked the other bus from passing and it is obvious that it is that type of behaviour could have led into a serious fatal accident both having passengers from both buses and other road users getting injured or ending up as a fatal injuries.”

Of interest is that while the Transport Board has reacted swiftly to the situation on the western road, there has been no comment on the bus clashes between the Valencia bus and Morales bus last week. Admittedly, there was no video evidence. Chief Transport Officer Tirso Galvez thanked the commuter who posted the video and encouraged the members of the public to keep bus operators accountable.
