Screen_Shot_2017-07-27_at_7.57.38_PMThe trial against Gian Guerra, the man charged for the murder of Belize Defence Force soldier Rafael Rivas, is currently being heard at the Northern Session of the Supreme Court. The trial began on the 10th of July, 2017, before Justice Herbert Lord and a ruling is expected to be handed down sometime soon.

CTV3 News understands the prosecution is being represented by Shanidie Chell while the defendant is being represented by Attorney Leslie Hamilton. The case is expected to resume on Tuesday August 1st.

Viewers may recall that on Saturday October 10th 2015 shortly after 9:00 p.m. whilst Rafael Rivas was reportedly socializing at Panda’s Bar located on North Park Street here in Orange Walk Town, an altercation ensued between him and the accused, Gian Guerra. Reports suggest that during the altercation a second individual grabbed Rivas and held him from behind. It was at that moment that Guerra is said to have pulled out a knife and inflicted several stab wounds on Rivas.

When police arrived at the scene, Rivas’ body was discovered lying in a pool of blood near the entrance of the establishment’s restroom. He had already succumbed to his injuries.
