Screen_Shot_2017-08-08_at_7.45.58_PMShortly before 6:00 this morning, the ‘all clear’ was issued for our country by the National Emergency Management Organization ‘NEMO’ as Tropical Storm Franklin dodged the jewel and was no longer a threat.

While our country was mostly spared from the effects of Franklin, our Mexican neighbors are reporting some flooding as heavy rains and winds were experienced throughout last night as the storm made landfall sometime around 10:45 with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, north of Chetumal near Pulticub, Mexico located some 72 miles northeast of Corozal.

Footage gathered from various news and social media pages show the after effects of Franklin in Mexican states, including some fallen trees and debris as well as major flooding in areas of neighboring Chetumal Quintana Roo and other surrounding areas. Reports from “Noticas 10” in Chetumal is reporting mostly flooding as no major structural damages was seen in the state.

Tropical Storm Franklin was reported to have weakened since making land fall over the course of last night. Latest information on Franklin however, indicates that the storm is re-gaining strength in the Yucatan Peninsula, where it is believed to become a category one hurricane by the time it hits Mexico again on Thursday.

Here in Belize, NEMO is advising the general public that while the ‘All clear’ has been declared residents are to stay alert for possible flooding due to rainfall associated with the system as it moves slowly due northwest of the country over southern Mexico. Rainfall totals of 2-4 inches with isolated higher amounts are possible.
