The deepening controversy over the most recently expose Vega land deals have triggered public condemnation on social media and morning show airwaves. Today the social partners also began to chip in, with the Chamber of Commerce expressing concern over the Prime Minister’s responses to reports of wrongdoing.

The Chamber’s release says [quote] “despite evidence of blatant abuse of office for personal gain, the Prime Minister has commented that he doubts there is any actionable illegality. With due respect to the office, it is not for any Prime Minister to make that determination” [end quote].

The Chamber then adds its voice, supporting the call for an investigation into the allegations in the Lands Ministry.

The business sector representative group concludes chiding the PM, saying that as a responsible leader he should encourage investigation without political interference.

Opposition Leader John Briceno commented on the Chamber’s release, committing that a PUP Government will take the fight against corruption seriously.

“I congratulate the Belize Chamber of Commerce that has quickly taking out a Press Release condemning the actions and reminding the Prime Minister that he needs to take swift action, we will be meeting with all the social partners, the council of churches, the Unions to talk to them about what present action we can take but I can assure you that when we get into government, when we forms the next government when the Prime Minister calls or this or the next one calls the next elections we are going to have a PUP government and I want to assure the Belizean people that we are going to do a thorough investigation in that ministry and I have put it on record and I am going to put it on record again that any wrong doing that we find that took place during their tenure we are going to take swift action against them we are going to pass it on to the police prosecution, to the DPP to take action against these people.”

Even though Gaspar Vega is no longer the Deputy Prime Minister, nor UDP Deputy Leader, nor a Cabinet Minister, he remains a major political figure for the UDP in the north. Despite his limited political activity or public appearances, he still is the UDP’s area representative in Orange Walk North, and despite having been stripped of power in Belmopan, Vega still sits in the VIP – very important politician - section of the ruling party’s side of the National Assembly. But with the intensifying political and legal woes of UDP politician, is the Opposition considering the recall mechanism to remove him from office. Today the PUP leader said that all options are on the table.

Honourable John Briceno – Party Leader of People’s United Party

“We know that it was all show, the Prime Minister has been a very good showman when he passed the recall act because I pointed out to him in 2009 that when he put a threshold of 65% of the people that are registered in any division that have to take place have to go out and vote, I pointed it out to him that it was going to be next to impossible to get 65% because all he has to do is tell his UDP people not to go out and vote and then with the people that no longer live in Belize it is going to be difficult to get a 65%  in any constituency but that does not mean I have given up, we are going to fight and I want to put on record that we in the PUP appreciate all the work that Monchi Cervantes and his committee in Orange Walk North they have been doing and I going to encourage him that now with all these new revelations that it is time to walk the streets and get the signatures that at the very least we can have the signatures for a recall that in itself is going to be damming on Gaspar Vega and the United Democratic Party.”
