Police Minister Elodio Aragon confirmed today that as requested by Prime Minister Dean Barrow the Police have commenced an investigation into the allegations of fraud made by private citizen Amy Forte in relation to the use of her name and signature on a land title which was falsely granted by former Minister of Natural Resources Gaspar Vega and which documents show was fraudulently sold to and transferred into the name of the Minister’s son, Andre Vega’s name.

Vega has admitted to the land transaction, but in a letter which his attorney Estevan Perera wrote to the CEO in Ministry of Natural Resources Sharon Parham Young yesterday, he claims that all transactions were facilitated through an unnamed land agent. He also admitted that he had never met Forte and that all he did was accept his land agent’s facilitation.

Vega’s statement will now go under heavy scrutiny and investigation by the authorities, with the objective of finding out who forged Forte’s name and signatures. According to Police Minister Aragon, the authorities will investigate freely.

“The police department has a job to do regardless of who it is, I’ve always said as minister responsible for police wherever the chip lied so be it, we have a duty not only to the protection of rights of people but also to this nation, the police department has launched an investigation into that situation and as soon as we get some more information you all will be informed about it but definitely the police department has launched an investigation because an official complaint has been lodged of fraud and that has to be investigated and it will be investigated.”

“Sir, for you personally as a politician in Orange Walk is it painful for you to say one of your fellow colleagues being accused of abuse of public trust also discrediting the party and the government for which you are a part of?”

Honourable Elodio Aragon, Minister of State in the Home Affairs

“What I could tell you is that I can’t elaborate in anything in terms of …because that is allegations at the end of the day and it has to be carried out etc., so I can’t comment on something like that you know but on a personal note I would tell you we must understand that we are dealing with human beings and human beings I mean everybody is different but what I want to stress out here is that the United Democratic Party across the board and you can compared that from here to the history of parties the United Democratic Party has always been the better party, is always been the party that serves its people and that’s all I have to say.”

“Sir, the UDP was elected on a platform of anti-corruption and the party at this current day is more embattled that is when you all came into government, do you see it as a concern this appearance of a decline in the public trust that the entire party as a whole should have been safeguarding for the Belizean people?”

Honourable Elodio Aragon, Minister of State in the Home Affairs

“Listen, we have one of the greatest Prime Minister this country have ever had, the Honorable Dean Oliver Barrow, he is the only Prime Minister who has dealt with his ministers when they have gone astray we cannot say that to be the same with the PUP that in itself should tell you that this United Democratic Party will stand for what is right.”
