IrmaWe’re barely four months into the 2017 hurricane Atlantic season but this morning the 10th storm was named Jose and we could be witnessing the naming of the 11th if a tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico strengthens before making landfall.

But tonight, all eyes are on Hurricane Irma, a category-5 hurricane that has been classified a very dangerous and potentially catastrophic storm, and which at this hour, is battering the Leeward Islands and very likely aiming at the U.S. gulf coast through the weekend. At this time Irma is not a threat to Belize.

At 6:00pm, Irma was packing winds of 185 miles per hour, located 130 miles east of Antigua, and moving at 15 miles per hour.

The storm has triggered hurricane warnings for ten islands along its path, including Antigua, Anguilla, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republican; plus Hurricane Watches for four others.

Forecasters predict that Hurricane Iris will move on a north-west path, towards Cuba and then Florida or along the U.S. Gulf coast. Florida has already declared a state of emergency considering the storm’s path.
