Screen_Shot_2017-09-12_at_8.15.51_PMThree persons including an 8 year old boy were seriously injured following an accident on Saturday evening in Corozal Town.

The accident happened on San Andres Road, right at this junction that leads to the Baeza Layout area between a motorcycle and a vehicle.

Corozal Police have released very little information about the incident, but we understand that 26 year old Melanie Requena was driving the motorcycle with two other passengers, 40 year old Claudia Arana Martinez and her 8 year old son. The motorcycle was travelling from San Andres Road into the cutoff when they were reportedly hit from behind by an incoming vehicle.

The impact plunged the trio on the motorcycle unto the rough ground, causing various injuries. Martinez suffered major scrapes and bruises on her body, sprains and a gash on the right side of her head. The boy fell face first and received major scrapes on his face and body. They were both taken to the Corozal Community Hospital and Requena has been released.

We understand that Martinez was the only one without a helmet, therefore she suffered the worst of the injuries including cuts and scrapes to her body, face and a major hit to her head that has caused massive head trauma. Martinez was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where she is in a coma and has undergone surgery for inflammation on her brain.

The identity of the driver of the vehicle has not been released by the authorities for unknown reasons. However, they have confirmed that they have issued a Notice of Intended Prosecution pending their investigations. We will continue to follow this case.
