Corozal Police authorities have indicated to CTV-3 News that they are awaiting on legal guidance from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution to know whether they will proceed with charges against 41 year old Francis Sharp in relation to the traffic accident that occurred on September 9th, which claimed the life of a Corozal Town mother of two while injuring two others.
40 year old Claudia Arana Martinez, one of the victims, passed away on Friday September 15th morning at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City due to serious injuries she sustained.
The incident took place on San Andres Road at this junction with the road to Baeza Layout. Martinez was a passenger on a motorcycle driven at the time by 26 year old Melanie Requena. Martinez’s 8 year old son was also with them on the motorcycle. It is believed that while the trio turned into the junction on their way home, the green-in-colour Toyota Rav 4 driven by Sharp collided into them from the rear.
The impact threw the persons off the motorbike and unto the ground, causing severe injuries on all. Martinez who was the only one not wearing a helmet, suffered the worst of the injuries including cuts and scrapes to her body, face and a major hit to her head that caused head trauma and eventually led to her death.
Sharp, we understand, was issued with a Notice of Intended Prosecution by Police authorities and then released. A urine sample was also taken for alcohol level analysis, as reports indicate that in Sharp’s SUV authorities found beer containers.
On Friday, nearly the week after the incident, surviving victim Melanie Requena was allowed to give a statement of the incident to the Police.
Martinez will be laid at a funeral service to be held in Corozal Town tomorrow.
