The PUP’s Parliamentary Caucus met this evening to discuss the CCJ ruling and events leading up to today’s press conference. Opposition Leader Hon. John Briceno shared whether the PUP was prepared to respond to the matter of the UHS ruling.

“We are not at the point of making a decision as to whether it is going to be a yes or a no or whatever it is important for us to get the fact for us to get a proper understanding as to what has been taking place under the Barrow administration, what we know for a fact is that the Barrow administration has been litigating from day one and every case he has taken up he has lost and he has cost this country millions and millions of dollars, what we know is a fact is that UDP lawyers and members of the Barrow family they have wrapped up probably in the millions of dollars in litigations so it has been a good business for the Barrow family and the UDP about this litigation and litigation, Belize’ name is being dragged  in the international arena and we continue to lose and continue to pay  hundreds of millions of dollars to Mr. Ashcroft and his companies.”

Briceno also responded to the PM’s assertion that when the matter goes before the House of Representatives, he will allow the members to vote on their conscience and will be guided by the majority vote.

Honourable John Briceno - Opposition Leader

“That is a cop out that is the coward’s way because we are in this situation today because the Prime Minister Barrow, because of his spitefulness, his vindictiveness and bad mindedness decided that he was going to undo a settlement, now many people knew that back then and they know now that I had a problem to the whole issue that led to this problem but at the end of the day the Prime Minister manage to find a settlement whether you like it or dislike it or you feel no way about it a settlement was found that did not cost directly the taxpayers of this country and because Dean Barrow so bad minded and he say he want to put people in jail and he is so bad minded and this has been a pissing contest between Mr. Ashcroft and Mr. Barrow and unfortunately that piss is falling on us because we are bearing the cost of that so Mr. Barrow is being a coward when he is saying oh we are going to be doing a conscience vote he as a lawyer knows what he supposed to do.”

While Briceno remarked that the matter is being looked at seriously by the PUP, they are also concerned that the Barrow Administration is simply using the issue to distract Belizeans from our own bevy of domestic problems.

Honourable John Briceno - Opposition Leader

“Let’s not forget that this is a circus, the United Democratic Party wants to distract from the real problems in this country, that today we have the most corrupt government in this country has ever seen, when the Deputy Prime Minister is still insisting that he has not seen a letter that I sent to him asking the hard questions about the Belize Infrastructure Limited, when I have sent to the media a copy of the email that I have sent to him, when they could lie so blatantly something is desperately wrong with this government, they don’t want us to talk about the issues they want us to forget about what has taken place at the Lands Department, they want us to forget what is taking place at the Immigration Department, they want us to forget that we have an economy that is collapsing when they say that it was going to grow, last year we had a recession and from that recession we had a meagre 0.5% growth, we have issues with crime and for them this is a media circus, they love the distraction, a distraction for the problems that they have caused and go on top of the Belizean people.”

When asked how he would vote, Briceno said he will “wait and see” how the ordeal unravels over the next days.
