noimgaeThe Ministry of Health is tonight reporting that there is an increase in the number of gastroenteritis cases nationally as individuals have been observed with symptoms ranging from diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and fever. The increase in cases is primarily observed in individuals who are older than 5 years, however, a few numbers have begun to affect younger children in the age range of one to four.

In order to reduce the cases the Ministry has increased its surveillance activity at all district levels and is assisting in promoting best practices to prevent and reduce further spread of the illness.

To prevent the illness from spreading you are asked to wash your hands with clean, running water, turn off tap and then apply soap, Lather for 15 to 30 seconds, make sure to wash the backs of hands, under fingernails and between fingers, scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds, rinse hands thoroughly under clean, running water, and dry your hands with a clean towel or air dry them.

The Ministry also advises that persons should wash their hands before and after preparing and eating food, after bathroom use, when handling garbage, after touching soiled areas or vomit, and also before and after caring for someone who is sick.

The Ministry advises the public to visit the nearest health center if you or your child are showing symptoms of gastroenteritis. Immediate attention should be given to anyone, especially children, whose symptoms are worsening.
