Last week we reported on the outcry of the onion and potato farmers in northern Belize about the needed market conditions for the harvest they are preparing to reap in the next few weeks. On a yearly basis, these farmers struggle to sell their produce because of poor protection from Government marketing agencies which allow the importation of vegetables even though locally there is enough to sustain demands. This year, the farmers sought to pre-empt those hurdles and called out the Government to protect them. Opposition leader Hon. John Briceno agreed.

“We in the PUP come from what Mr. Price taught us and in Belize we need to eat what we grow and we need to grow what we eat we strongly believe that whenever we have Onions we need to eat our Onions when we have tomatoes we need to eat our tomatoes so I want to make it very clear that the next PUP government when we get in there we are going to give full support to our farmers especially our agricultural farmers that are out there working on their hard and under the hot sun to protect them to ensure that whenever they produce that they are going to eat what they produce, unfortunately I wish I could gave them good news but the record of this government has been one of corruption, one of abandonment and I find it hard that they are going to protect these farmers but we are going to call them out we are going to make sure that they know that the minister of agriculture understands that there are produce and vegetable that are going to come to market very soon and they need to give a commitment that they are going to defend the interest of our local farmers.”

Briceno also reminded the Government that the sugar roads in the north need urgent attention.

Honourable John Briceno, PUP Leader

“We’d have expected that the ministry of works would have been fixing the sugar roads since last year so that they could be ready for the crop, they didn’t do it, now that the crop is on and we have good weather that they could have been fixing the roads again we see no attempt or very little work being done to assist the cane farmers in Corozal and the Orange Walk District, this is a government that has lost its way, this is  government that its only looking at its only self-interest, instead of looking after the interest of the cane farmers in the north they are looking after their own personal interest, you can see the greed, we can see that in one year, last year the Prime Minister paid his brother over five and a half million dollars, in one day his brother collected $1.5 million dollars, his own law firm last year alone has collected 1.5 million so you could imagine how much they have collected that demonstrates that this government have not been looking after the interest of the people but the interest of a few and am calling them out that they need to fix our sugar roads, just like with the fuel like I was told up to last week we have not been getting the subsidy that they have been giving the cane farmers for their fuel we have to call them out enough promises it is time to act and the time to act is now that is why am asking the people from Corozal town that on March the 7th they need to come out and to speak in one voice and to ensure that we have Rigo Vellos as the next Mayor of Corozal town along with the six councilor candidates.”
