fdcTonight, there is some good news coming out of the Chiquibul National Park as the Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) are reporting positive growth of Xate stocks in the Forest Reserve.

According to a release issued by FCD over the weekend, for the third time in history, a field research was conducted of the Xate stocks in the Chiquibul with the purpose of evaluating the population of the valuable plant and to compare this year’s average results with results obtained back in 2012.

Results of this year’s research shows that compared to 2012, when an estimated total of 16. 34 million leaves of xate had been illegally extracted from the Chiquibul Forest, in 2018 an estimated total of 1.65 million was recorded, an overall decrease of 89.9%.

The decrease reportedly translates to an economic decrease in illegal harvesting from seven hundred and twenty-four thousand two hundred and eighty-eight US dollars in 2012 to seventy-three thousand one hundred and seventy-one US dollars in 2018.

According to FCD, this major decrease in illegal xate harvesting may have been caused by increase patrol of the Chiquibul as well as changes in xate prices in the international market and pressing exportation policies in recent years.
