50945999_823444791331873_8284453810416386048_nOver the weekend, a cold front which was predicted to hit in Mexico, affected the entire Yucatan Peninsula as it landed on Sunday afternoon accompanied by heavy rains and strong winds. Though it lasted approximately an hour and half, it toppled six city polls in Playa del Carmen and caused over 20 trees to fall, one of which reportedly resulted in human injury, whereas, there was a reported fatality in Bacalar due to an accident.

Other injuries were suffered by vehicles and properties including a large tree which was uprooted along the popular Fifth Avenue in Playa while individuals sheltered from the rain.

The severe weather conditions, were due to the junction of cold fronts 30 and 31 on the Yucatan Peninsula and caused an Operation Storm to be activated in Quintana Roo. The strong winds caused Federal Electricity Commission cables to explode in several municipalities while power failures were reported. There were also reports of power cuts as well as a temporary navigation closure that began at 4:00 p.m. in Holbox and Isla Mujeres.

While the winds reached 40 knots in Holbox, there was a temporary boat suspension. It is also reported that twenty-two flights were diverted from the Cancun International Airport, making a safe landing at nearby airports in Belize and Mérida as an alternative.

While the National Meteorological Service announced today that the country of Belize experienced the passage of that cold front yesterday… it was of course, strongly observed here in the northern part of the country with strong winds as can be seen from this video captured in Sarteneja Village of the Corozal District.

The Met Service further indicated that while there are other cold fronts ahead, more can be expected to pass over Belize. The weather forecast for the next 24 hours shall include variably cloudy skies and cool conditions while the extended forecast is expected to be fair and dry.
