NoImageStaying on the topic of climate change in our country, drought conditions currently being experienced in the Orange Walk and Corozal Districts as well as other parts of Northern Belize is expected to continue. This is according to the National Meteorological Service of Belize which has issued a long-term drought monitoring warning for the North of Belize.

According to the met service in their weather outlook conditions for the month of August” the current 12-month SPI-based drought outlook for the country shows that long-term drought is evolving over the Corozal and Orange Walk districts as well as a small area in the south near Savannah. A long-term drought warning is therefore in effect for those areas”

The extreme dry conditions in this part of the country has been having effects on various bodies of water. Earlier this year we told you how the Sapote Lagoon located within the villages of San Narciso, San Victor and Louisville in the Corozal District dried up due to severe drought in the area. This same phenomenon is also being seen here in the Orange Walk District as reports at the moment indicate that the Honey Camp Lagoon, located approximately eight miles outside Orange Walk Town is slowly drying up. Reports are that other areas here in the North have also experienced the same problem. We will continue to follow this situation closely.
