Reports on international media at this time is that there is a new migrant caravan which has left from Honduras and is headed for the United States.

The caravan it is reported departed from San Pedro Sula earlier this week, and reports say it could be passing form Guatemala through to Belize in the coming days. Once in Belize it is speculated that the migrants will attempt to cross into Mexico using the border crossing at La Union. Based on last year’s mass migrant mobilization it is speculated that Mexico under pressure from the USA will restrict the passage of these migrants. This then poses concern for the jewel, as the caravan is expected to be at our doors by the end of this week.

Yesterday during an interview with the Minister of Immigration Hon. Godwin Hulse he was questioned about this report and the concerns it might pose for the Jewel, here is what he had to say.

“The relevant CEO’s of Immigration, National Security, Police and so are meeting this morning in caucus to look at this and see first of all if the report is accurate and what measures we would take. Clearly, Belize will not be and cannot be used as a transit point for migrants to the United States, they have block that there were troops placed as I understand it on the border between Mexico/Belize and we have no mechanism or whatever to house those people so we looking at it very carefully.”

“What is the solution where they might be on the way and we can’t stop them from like literally brakes them where they are currently?”

Godwin Hulse- Minister of Immigration

“I can’t answer that yet but as I said we are not a third safe country in fact that is in Guatemala and so if they moving into Guatemala from Honduras they’ve have to hit Guatemala before they hit us, the United States rule and recommendation to Guatemala was that they become that third safe country, I know that yesterday the President in his inaugural speech he talked about bringing legislation to declare the gangs terrorist organization, all of those things are of concern to us because if those people begin to run out of Guatemala as they are running out of El Salvador Belize looks like an attractive place so we really have to tighten up and be vigilant on that matter but I can’t take it any further than that because I’ll be saying things I don’t know.”

Reporter

“So, at the end of the day is it that they can’t stay?”

Godwin Hulse- Minister of Immigration

“No, no, no they won’t stay in Belize that’s for sure.”

International reports also indicate that military troops have been placed at the Belize/Mexico border after law enforcement authorities received information of the fast-moving caravan.
