On Sunday the Peoples United Party held its 20th convention to select standard bearers who will contest general elections whenever they are called by Prime Minister Dean Barrow.

Five persons offered themselves for the post in the Cayo Central constituency Collet Montejo, Alex Balona, Steve Valencia, Mario Castellanos and Gary Young.

More than 1200 PUP supporters came out to support their champion, and while all teams went all out, in the end there could be only one winner. When counting was completed, political newcomer Collet Montejo emerged victorious with 491 votes. Alex Balona received 308 votes, Steve Valencia received 196 votes, Mario Castellanos received 183 votes and Gary Young received 55 votes.

With 11 conventions remaining before the end of June, the PUP secretariat has moved into high gear. The next convention is scheduled for Sunday, May 22nd, when newcomer Nancy Marin will go up against Landy Habet for the post of standard bearer of the Cayo North-east constituency.
