hulseThe Government of the day has been widely criticized and even accused of being in bed with BSI/ASR after Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced that there will be no crop if a commercial agreement is not signed between the miller and the producer during a press conference held last week.

Internationally and locally the sentiments vary when it comes to the recent sugar crisis and if we talk about the opinions on the social media, well, GOB is being chastised for basically forcing caneros to sign the agreement with the manufacturer.

Also, GOB is accused of not playing its role when it comes to influencing the start of crop via the Sugar Industry Control Board. The bottom line is that accusations are being placed squarely at the door of GOB for aligning with BSI/ASR thus helping the company defeat cane farmers who are on the verge of signing the commercial agreement two weeks after they voted against it.

With so much blames hurled there way, Government came out on the defensive today. But it was not the Prime Minister who faced the music; it was Attorney-General Wilfred Elrington and Minister of Immigration and Labor Godwin Hulse who were appointed by Cabinet to do all the talking.

We start of first with Elrington who stated that the entire finger pointing at Government is utter nonsense and a result of misinformation.

Wilfred Elrington - Attorney-General

“I think the Prime Minister said it very well…it is nonsense upon nonsense, nonsense upon stilts really. Any politician knows that he would be committing suicide if he goes against the people. Our mandate is really to represent the people and to do what is in their interests. They are the people who are going to vote for us, no foreign multi-national corporation. The Prime Minister knows that, I know that, Godwin Hulse knows that, the Cabinet knows that, so that our mandate is to look out for the best interests of the people, and to do that we ensure that we are properly informed as to the facts and the law. We know the kind of balance that we have to make when we are dealing with issues of this type and we try to act very scrupulously, thinking very clearly with respect to each move that we make”
