Hon. Briceno also chastised the Government for presenting a budget with financial data that has not been verified by the Auditor General. But the truth is that none of the budgets since 2012 have been audited. Briceno committed that the next PUP Government will ensure proper auditing for each Ministry and that anyone caught in wrongdoing will be prosecuted.

“We on this side strongly believe that if we are serious about good governance then we must do a lot more than just sign the UN Convention Against Corruption we must also respect the Constitution.  This UDP administration spent four Billion dollars from 2012 to 2016 and none of those four Billion dollars has undergone the scrutiny of the Auditor General especially Belize Infrastructure Limited (BIL); have to go and search every invoice and receipt, we cannot continue to spend tax dollars without giving account for it, to show how serious we are about good governance and about ending corruption, one of my first acts as Prime Minister will be to bring legislation to the National Assembly which call for a full audit of every government ministry and I say it in this place on this day whomever is found to be involved in any illegal or corrupt act will be arrested and charged and if found guilty they will go to jail.”

Day 1 of the budget debate wrapped up at 6:05 with only eight of the thirty one House Members having presented. Corozal North area rep Hugo Patt was presenting when he was interrupted and cut short by the House Speaker Laura Tucker Longsworth to wrap up. The debate continues tomorrow.
