19141897_10155394923349347_2077781613_nThirty one year old Elvin Isaac Jimenez, a fisherman from the village of Sarteneja in the Corozal District had to pay the court almost a $1,000 in fines after he admitted he was caught fishing inside the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve and also had in his possession, 28 undersized conchs. Jimenez was first summons to appear in court back in April of this year but did not appear and today he was brought to court on the strength of a bench warrant.


Jimenez who was unrepresented wasted no time and pleaded guilty to two charges…possession of undersized conchs and fishing in a conservation zone. He was fined $150.00 plus $5.00 cost of court of which he must pay by July 31st, 2017, in default 1 month for the offense of possession of undersize conchs plus an additional $560.00 for the 28 undersized conchs. That fine is to be cancelled by August 15th, 2017, in default, 1 month in prison. For the offense of fishing in a marine reserve, Jimenez was fined $100.00 plus $5.00 cost of court. This payment is to be made by July 31st, 2017, in default, 1 month in prison.


Jimenez was caught fishing within the Conservation Zone of the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve by Fisheries Authorities, on April 1, 2017, at about 6:45 in the morning. In court today Jimenez told Magistrate Sharon Fraser he was unaware the area was a marine reserve.
