Thirty five year old Gerardo Silvestre Chable, a teacher from Escuela Secundaria Tecnica Mexico, appeared before the Magistrate’s Court yesterday and was arraigned on charges of Manslaughter by Negligence, Causing Death by Careless Conduct, Driving a motor vehicle due care and Driving a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license.
Chable was behind the steering wheel of this white Isuzu Rodeo when he knocked 52 year old Hermenejildo Patt, a cane cutter, husband and father of six children last Thursday evening in San Narciso Village.
Patt, according to several witnesses we spoke to in the community, was crossing the street on his bicycle after 6pm on Thursday January 25th when Chable’s Isuzu Rodeo, which was heading in the direction of San Victor Village, came barrelling at him. The vehicle drove hit Patt, drove over him and even dragged him on the road for several yards.
Patt was still alive when residents put him on a pickup truck in an attempt to get him to the hospital, but he succumbed to the major injuries before he arrived.
In Court, Chable did not have to take a plea, as the charge of manslaughter by negligence is an indictable offence.
He was offered bail at two sureties of $7,000, which he was able to meet. He will be returning to Court on March 21st.
As our report indicates, one of the accusations is that Chable did not have a valid driver’s license at the time of the accident. This is a serious offence as it means he was disqualified from driving. We have learnt that this disqualification happened following an incident just last week when Police officials caught him driving allegedly intoxicated. He appeared before the Court and his license was suspended. We note that Chable is a high school teacher, and there are reports that at the time of the accident there were also other teachers from Escuela Secundaria Tecnica Mexico with him.
Authorities are also awaiting the results of Chable’s blood specimen which was taken following the accident, to see if alcohol use was a factor in the accident.
