Does Orlando Burns the U.D.P Standard Bearer for Orange Walk East Standard Bearer hold a dual citizenship? We’ll reports are that he does and based on that information Sylvia Gillett a registered voter of Orange Walk East objected to Burn’s nomination today. Now, this is certainly a bomb for the U.D.P who has been criticizing Yolanda Shakron all along.

At 2:00 this afternoon Gillett visited the Sandy Hunter Library where she handed over the objection letter to the returning officer for the Orange Walk East Electoral Division. The objection letter states and we quote “I hereby object to the nomination of Orlando Landy Burns for nomination as a candidate for the United Democratic Party for the Orange Walk East Electoral Division for the General Elections to be held on March 7^th 2012, on the ground that the said Orlando Landy Burns does not qualify as a candidate because I am informed and I verily believe that he is, by virtue of his own act, a citizen of a foreign state.” End of quote.

Today CTV3 News spoke to Gillett right after the objection was filed.

“I visited the Returning Officer for the Orange Walk East at the Sandy library and we presented an objection, based on the fact that we strongly believe that we will present proof to the public that he has dual nationality and in Section 58 1(a) of the Constitution of Belize that makes him not eligible to hold a sit in the House of Representatives.  We are doing strongly on the fact that we know that he has dual nationality and even thought if he runs against Doctor Marco Tulio Mendez he is still stand no chance against Marco, we know that Marco Tulio Mendez will win that division for the People’s United Party but based on the laws of Belize this man is not eligible to run for a public office.”

“We do have proof that he has dual nationality, I do not want to reveal to the media immediately which other citizenships he holds, he is a Belizean by birth so he is a Belizean by nationality and he has a nationality of another country and we will be presenting that to the media very soon.”

“Did you all just find out about it why is it that it is just until today, nomination day that you come with it, people might be saying this is just mischief.”

“It is not mischief, we just find out a few days ago but we had to wait to be able to get proof of what we are saying and we have that proof, w have not presented it to the returning officer as yet but we will be presenting it to the returning officer. At the office we presented the objections, I went along with a few party supporters just so that I could have witness that I presented this objection and all they told me is that they cannot accept the objection until I bring proof to them before four o’clock this evening and if I do take before four then they will take whatever actions they need to take, but that’s all the returning officer told me and they stayed with the objection form that I presented to them and they checked the electoral list to see that I was an elector of that division.”

“I can only say that the party will take all the necessary steps to ensure that proper action is taken when we present this proof to the Election and Boundaries Department.”

When we checked with Gillett late this evening she told us that the prove of Landy Burns having a dual citizenship was not presented to the returning officer today but that the media will soon have that prove in their hands.
