Praying Pelican Missions was established in 2003 with the vision to literally impact the entire world. Over the course of the years many of the groups have visited Belize offering different types of services, including dentistry, to members of the community they visit. Here in the North we have had the privilege of hosting several members of Pelican Missions and today, to our surprise, when we visited El Buen Pastor Church in the Louisiana Area, we found a Praying Pelican Mission Team from Madison Wisconsin offering free cosmetic services to women of the Orange Walk Community.

This morning about 50 women of the Orange Walk community gathered inside El Buen Pastor Church and waited for their turn to be beautified. The services of manicure, pedicure, haircut and meditation was offered free of cost by the women of the Praying Pelican Missions.

“What we are doing is we are reaching out to the women of church, we decided to have haircutting, nail filing, hand message, meditations for the women of the community and as an outreached to just show them God’s love and we receive so much from the people of Orange Walk and it our way of giving back to the community to the women of the church.”

“I understand this your fourth year.”
Rhonda Round, Volunteer
“This is my fourth time here in Orange Walk working with this organization and this church.”

“How would you describe the response of the women here in Orange Walk?”
Rhonda Round, Volunteer
“It is just great as you can see at the background here the women are enjoying the time, we get to work with them through the different stations, we get to have dialogue with them and talk with them about just whatever.”
The group of missionaries has been in Belize for the past week offering their services to women and children of sugar city. Rhonda Round is one of the groups volunteer and today she told us what all they have been working on.

“What we done through the past week is that we have the church dedication, the church has expanded over the last four years we first came and we have bible school every day for the children from 4 to 5:30 and today is the last day, we visited the hospital, we’ve done some community walks reaching out to the community, there is a dental clinic over the Louisiana School, church services and then construction, some of the men are outside making pews for the church.”

“The underlying purpose is we are here to, we are so blessed by God and it is just a way for us to show our blessings to the people and gain God has blessed us in so many ways and this is a way for us to be able to provide something back.”
For first year volunteer Ginnette Koch, it is not just about pampering the women or much less about cutting their hair, for her there is a deeper meaning to the work she does.
Ginnette Koch, Volunteer
“They get a pretty bag and coupon and they tell us what they can have done haircut, manicure, things for their hair and the children can color and they get a meditation candle and put it all in the bag so they can take everything home with them and so if they want them cut they can if they don’t want it is alright too, so anyhow that’s how it got started, we want to do more for the mother that raise those beautiful children an so here and I are having a discussion, she wants it really short and I go like wait a minute it is very curly it will be curly when I get done so we’ve discussed it to make it a little longer but she is used to bow and so we are going to make it change. That’s why we are here not to change them but to be kind and make a difference that way and w just want to know about them and take it back to the US and say, we women are alive, we want our hair beautiful, we want our hands message you know, we want to be treated right and am sure they are but there is not women that doesn’t want to touch them the right way, and so that’s why we are here for this particular thing we are doing today.”
For the Praying Pelicans volunteers the trip to Belize has been a wonderful experience.

“It’s just great to be here we appreciate the hospitality, the friendliness and we are all her to serve one God and we just appreciate people being so open and accepting of us and our ability to giving back to the community.”
Just a few yards away another group to the Praying Pelicans Missionaries where at Louisiana Government School providing free dental service to the students. We’ll have that story for you further into the newscast.
